Scenes from a Wedding

Posted in Photography, This Artist's Life on September 30th, 2011 by AngelaNHunt

So as most of you know, I was asked to be the wedding photographer for my friends, Liz and Eric, a couple of weeks ago. The bride has seen the first album (I’m still processing) and shared them, so I feel that I can share some too.

L&E's Wedding5

The wedding day dawned with marine layer, but looking out from the bed and breakfast where the reception was going to be held, all I could think was: bucolic.

And then this guy showed up. This is one of my personal totems: the blue jay. According to some, they hold the power of heaven and earth, symbolized by the blue and white of their feathers. All I know is that blue jays make me unreasonably happy.

And then I got *this* shot. Yes. It’s a bowl of strawberries. It’s also probably one of the best still life photo I’ve ever taken. *That* was when I knew I was in for something special. The Gods of Photography don’t give you a gimmee like that unless they plan to go all out.

And they really did.

Have a slideshow of some of my favorites:

Red Knight Struck Down

Yeah, Red didn’t fare any better, did he?

Heh.

It’s a hard world, our Looking Glass Land. And not much in the way of pity.

Heroes, my two men, being willing to lay down in that sludge at the end of the day. It was their idea. Who was I to turn down such an opportunity?!

White Knight Fallen

White Knight Fallen

Oh. It got dark, didn’t it?

I said the series was called Alice Assassin. The question here is, but is this one of her kills?

As amusing as the story is, and as much fun as I had writing it, in many ways, I’m realizing that when I wrote it last year, I was already grappling with the Now what? question.

Sometimes, there’s no Now what? Sometimes, your story ends in a creek, face down in the algae.

And here we were, golden hour. Failing, perfect light. And that face.

*deep appreciative sigh*

There are certain conditions and certain times of day that are my favorite time to shoot. Early morning. Light marine layer at noon where the entire sky becomes the Gods’ own diffuser. And…

Golden Hour.

There’s not a photographer alive that doesn’t live for Golden Hour, that time of day where the light of the setting sun is perfect. It’s still light out, but it’s not the murder of full noon day sun where you better have a fill flash to cancel out the harsh shadows under people’s chins. The sky becomes true cerulean.

It’s magick. And the sun gives it to us every day.

Red Knight Walks Off Into the Sunset

Red Knight Walks Off Into the Sunset

It’s dark and it’s introspective and I love the colors. Really works for the series, because in some ways, there’s a Western flair to the story it’s coming from. The Red Knight would walk off into the sunset.

Too bad as a storyteller I’m more interested in what happens after and ruining my characters lives…

Cheshire Waits II

And once more, the Mad Model graces us with her presence.

*happy sigh*

Why do I love her?

“Climb up on that railing in 3 1/2 inch heels, please!”
“Okay.”

She’s just too fabulous. And here the Cat doesn’t seem charming at all, does she?

Ten Things I’d Relive

Posted in This Artist's Life on September 12th, 2011 by AngelaNHunt

This little thing trended on Twitter a while ago and I posted one response to it, but have since been thinking about it. So, in no particular order, here are ten things that I’d relive, if given the chance.

My father walking me down the aisle on my wedding day.

Holding my Mouse for the first time.

And holding my Bean for the first time.

That perfect day laying on the beach in Monaco, standing in the water after, little tiny fish nibbling my toes, and that gorgeous waiter bringing me soda at our lounge chairs.

Driving around Carmel with my husband that one day, dreaming about retirement homes in Pebble Beach.

That night standing on stage, alone in the theater, the work light throwing long shadows and feeling something so much bigger than me waiting and listening in the darkness of the house.

The night I walked fire for the first time.

The night I walked fire 108 times.

The night we walked the heart-shaped fire, laughing and singing, the first time I was ever able to do it from a place of joy and not fear.

The night we did the perfect show of The Crucible and reduced an audience to silence and weeping then thunderous applause.

Yeah. I’d live all those moments again if given the opportunity.

And it’s on.

Really, what more fun could there be?

Our stunt pigeon had moved on at this point. And the light was failing. But it was glorious and fun and I was the right kind of tired at the end of it all.

And the White Knight questions the Red Knight with the truly hard question.

Heh.

I love these guys so much and this shoot was so much damn fun.
